Why Should We Complete a Roommate Agreement?

One of the most common causes of roommate conflicts is lack of communication

So that each roommate's needs are met

To set "ground rules" for your room/apartment

To start off on the right foot towards an enjoyable roommate experience

How Does It Work?

Discuss and complete a Roommate Worksheet with your roommate(s).

Pick out a Roommate Agreement Form (see samples below) and discuss the questions involved.

Complete the Roommate Agreement Form together with your roommate(s). Feel free to revise as necessary.

Include any additional issues on a separate sheet of paper.

Refer to your Agreement if problems/questions arise and/or seek a third-party mediator to help you.

Post the following Roommate Bill of Rights on your refrigerator or other common area.

The right to read and study free from undue interference in one's room/apartment (unreasonable noise and other distractions inhibit the exercise of this right).

The right to sleep without undue disturbance from noise, guests, etc.

The right to expect respect for one's personal belongings.

The right to a clean environment in which to live.

The right to free access to one's room and apartment common rooms without pressure from a roommate.

The right to personal privacy.

The right to host guests (with the understanding and permission of the roommate/s) with the expectation that guests are to respect the rights of the host's roommate/s, neighboring tenants, and apartment rules and regulations.

The right to address grievances.

The right to be free from fear of intimidation, physical and/or emotional harm, and racial, sexual or other prejudicial harassment.
